Even with a SPDIF input as good as the Weiss, the DAC has to sync itself up to the timing of the incoming signal - purely by watching the signal. It all comes down, as it nearly always does, to clocking. It's not surprising that the Naim sounds best using directly-attached media rather than SPDIF input. My money is on the stick, which means I'm sticking with 1.4.6 for now. Which is most accurate, who cares when the USB stick sounds this good. 1.4.6 does a decent job of it but lacks that last level of refinement that the more direct digital signal path provides. 1.4.9.9 is relatvely thinner and edgy and just does not communicate the same emotional content. With the USB stick version you really feel like she is singing to you and the vocals seem to soar more.

The new version of Audirvana is actually less full and seems to miss on some harmonics and flow with both the vocals and the guitar. On my system 1.4.6 is closer to the USB stick straight into the DAC. I use a Naim DAC, Conrad Johnson CT5/LP70s Vivid B1 and Valhalla cables, so I reckon it is pretty honest and detailed setup. It's my show off track for non believers. The USB stick is the most communicative playing "Estate" from Meet Me in London, which consists of an acoustic guitar and vocals in a painstaking "new" transfer from analogue to 24 bit 192 by Naim label. I once thought that the computer beat the USB stick, but system improvements now show that to be false.

I can compare a USB stick straight into my DAC with both 1.4.6 and 1.4.9.9 via a MacBook Pro SSD 8 GB, via a Weiss INT202 and Nordost whitesomething. I've just been running 1.4.9.9 today for the first time.

You may need additional software / hardware to take full advantage of the higher 24-bit high-res audio formats, but any music lover that has heard 16-bit vs 24-bit will tell you it's worth it! Software for Mac OS X ProStudioMasters offers the original studio masters - exactly as the artist, producers and sound engineers mastered them - for download, directly to you. When you listen to music on a CD or tracks purchased via consumer services such as iTunes, you are hearing a low-resolution version of what was actually recorded and mastered in the studio. High-resolution audio offers the highest-fidelity available, far surpassing the sound quality of traditional CDs.
